How it Works
When a customer begins ordering at a restaurant or bar, servers simply swipe, dip, or tap a credit card to begin the pre-authorization process. The Aldelo Express Pre-Authorization feature then immediately does a “background check” on the card being used. Ideally, a card is found to be authentic, connected to an active bank account, and not lost or stolen. By using this feature, restaurants save themselves the time, money, and trouble of closing a tab with a fraudulent or inactive credit card. Bartenders and wait staff then continue conducting and serving orders with confidence.
Customers can also utilize the Masa+ Online Ordering and Payments solution to order food and drinks directly from their personal device and pay electronically for orders from a personal digital wallet that stores their credit cards. This provides a secure and convenient payment method for both customers and restaurants.
“Open” vs. “Limited” Bar Tab Pre-Auth
With “Open” Bar Tab Pre-Authorization, restaurant staff manually enter a given dollar amount against a credit card to confirm available funds in the cardholder’s account before they begin serving and charging a customer. In addition to saving restaurants and customers from the awkwardness, expense, and inconvenience of exchanging an invalid card, Open Bar Tab Pre-Authorization allows restaurants to authorize a card only once before beginning and closing an any-sized tab.
“Limited” Bar Tab Pre-Auth lets restaurants select from five preset dollar amount charges or create a customized limit charge against any credit card. This provides restaurants with a layer of payment insurance, since they know that a card has a set number of funds available in its connected bank account before beginning a charge. Both preset and custom limit charges can be based on the customer and their unique purchase history, helping restaurants avoid awkward, expensive, and difficult payment situations.
Restaurants’ Benefit
Both Open and Limited Pre-Authorization methods protect cards via token-based encryption as soon as they are captured, so restaurants are never in possession of customer data. Staff can still recall tabs, however, by searching the name and last four digits associated with a credit card. Both Pre-Auth features also allow servers to close a tab for more than the card was authorized, enabling customers to purchase as much as they would like from the restaurant.
