Can I Negotiate Lower Interchange Fees?
A merchant cannot negotiate the interchange fees, regardless who the merchant services provider (ISO) is. When a merchant switch merchant services company to another, the merchant will continue to pay the same interchange fees based on the merchant’s classification.

What are Dues & Assessments, and Association Fees?
These are fees assessed by the Card Brands such as Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. Each card brand has its own Dues & Assessments represented in fraction of a percent against the transaction volume. For example, a card brand may have the Dues & Assessment at 0.13%, which means if the transaction is $100, the merchant will also be assessed a 13 cent fee that is collected by the acquiring bank and reimbursed to the Card Brand. Association Fees are also assessed by the Card Brands and collected from the merchant by the acquiring bank per each transaction.
The combine of Interchange Fees, Dues & Assessments, and the Association Fees, commonly referred to as Interchange Costs or Wholesale Costs is non negotiable by merchants, and is the same for the merchant regardless which merchant service provider is chosen. Any merchant service providers claiming to have the ability to help merchants lower the costs of Interchange, Dues & Assessments, or Association Fees would certainly while keeping the merchant on Interchange Plus Pricing is certainly not being truthful. |
How Much are the Interchange Fees?
Interchange fees are not static and are adjusted twice a year from card brands such as Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. There are at least over 300 interchange fee programs that are calculated based on variables such as card entry method (swipe or keyed), merchant industry, ticket amount, card type and much more.
Interchange rates also vary by business size and operations; for example, online retailers often pay higher interchange fees than physical stores. Interchange fees make up by far the largest total fees paid to banks by merchants. |
What are the Interchange Fees?
Interchange are transaction fees that are paid by a merchant’s bank (acquirer) to a cardholder’s bank (issuer) whenever a customer uses their credit or debit card to make a purchase. These fees are paid to the card-issuing bank to cover costs such as fraud, bad debts, and risks involved in approving payments.
