Software piracy and scams are circulating within the point-of-sale industry with scammers directly facing resellers and merchants and stating that their company has “acquired, purchased, partnered, or licensed” the rights of leading point-of-sale provider solutions. These claims are often promoted with a similar looking product in an attempt to sell point-of-sale software and/or software licenses, using bait-and-switch tactics to promote an illegal and/or inferior product.

The evolution of technology has provided scammers with a variety of tools that make it appear to consumers they are calling from a legitimate local business, when in fact they may be on another continent. Phone numbers appear on consumer phones with a familiar area code and phone number that are used to cover the true identity of the scammer. Scammers will even launch altered websites that coincide with the false information they are providing.
